Guide to Georgetown DC

Hey everyone! It's crazy that I've been to Georgetown SO many times and yet have not posted about it. Today, that changes! I'm so thrilled to share my guide to visiting Georgetown and all the stops you just have to make. Of course, it all depends on what you're into. So, pick and choose as you please!

First of all, Georgetown is known for it's lively and colorful shops, good eats and scenic waterfront. If you ever have a chance to visit, I say do it! Even if it's just to grab a bite. Speaking of bites, here are some of my favorite food spots to check out:

Food:

1. Good Stuff Eatery

If you love a classic meal of burgers and fries, you'll love this place. Not only is it good but it's also not super pricey in comparison to some of the other restaurants on M Street. I typically just order the Farmhouse Bacon Cheeseburger (minus cheese because I'm lactose intolerant).

2. Farmers Fishers Bakers

Linked with the popular Founding Farmers and Farmers & Distillers, this restaurant does not fall behind. You can find some classic American dishes here with a few other international food (like sushi and pizza). My favorite to order is their chicken & waffles. It's delicious! However, whatever dish you order, you won't go wrong. You can find this gem tucked within the popular waterfront.

3. Guapos Restaurant

As a DMV local, you can find one of these throughout Maryland, DC & Virginia. However, I can never get enough. This Mexican restaurant features delicious fajitas, chimichangas and a most delicious fried ice cream dessert. This restaurant is also located by the waterfront.

4. Baked & Wired

I love me some desserts but especially the ice cream sandwiches from Baked & Wired. This bakery, tucked away off of Thomas Jefferson St & M St, features cupcakes, cakecups, cookies, rice cakes, pies, lemon bars, ice cream sandwiches and so much more with an added bonus of gluten free alternatives. You can order then individually, but you can also go to their website and order them in bulk for the same-day pick up or delivery! Now I found their cake cups to be.. okay. But my favorite dessert so far has been their ice cream sandwiches. In particular... FO'REAL. This salted caramel delight is just so yummy and comes inside gluten free cookie. Unfortunately, these come out seasonally (in the summer), so you may not find them in shop until around June.

5. Levain Bakery

Another delicious dessert spot you'll love is this bakery. Known for the chunky cake-like cookies, they've made their way from NY to DC and we are so here for it! You'll love love love their chocolate chip walnut cookies.

6. Laduree

My other favorite spot is Laduree. I first discovered it in NY and was thrilled when they opened shop in DC. Another Parision spot, this bakery features delicious goodies that go great with their tea options. My favorite are their macaroons but the have delicious croussiants too!

7. District Doughnut and Coffee

It's funny that half of these food spots are dessert spots. But, that should give you an idea of how much I love my desserts! This doughnut spot features toppings you wouldn't think of to be on a doughnut. But, they do it so well! The flavors change occasionally though. My favorite has always been their key lime pie doughnut. It tastes just like real key lime pie; which happens to be my favorite dessert in general. You'll definitely love these doughnuts!

8. Olivia Macaroon

Okay, my last dessert spot in the area happens to be Olivia Macaroon. Honestly, the name says it all. If you're in the mood for some yummy macaroons in the CUTEST boxes, then (besides Laduree) you should visit this cute shop. It's located right off of M St and it features the cutes macaroon mural you can snag a cute picture in front of too. My favorite flavor is their pistachio!

9. Chez Billy Sud

For all my fancy friends out there who want to really feel like they're dining in Georgetown, you'll want to check this restaurant out. With it being a French restaurant, you may leave having learned a few words in the language as the menus display French dishes using French words. Now, I'm not saying you won't be able to understand, but it really does make you feel like you're ordering food in Paris. Whether it's the Scottish Salmon or the DAUBE DE BOEUF, you can't go wrong. Oh, and in case you're wondering, that's the restaurant behind me in the picture.

10. DCG- District Chicken & Gyro

Though not necessarily on M St, in between Wisconsin & Dumbarton St is the best gyro shop you'll find. You have options of a wrap, a bowl over rice (with salad on the side) or just a salad for less than $15. You get a good portion for what you pay and QUALITY FOOD.

Things to do:

1. Find Cool Murals

You'll probably find some of the most Instagammable murals in Georgetown of all the other areas in DC! Right behind me in this picture is one of them. Check out the Georgetown website to see if you can find all of them. Click HERE.

2. Bowling at Pinstripe

Now I know bowling isn't something we'd want to do when visiting an area out of town. But for those who enjoy a good game of bowling, Pinstripes adds to the fun with dining brought to your bowling lane. I love their individual pizzas!

3. Go on a Water Taxi

If you're interested in getting some of the best views of DC from the water, you can hitch a ride on one of these. Potomac Riverboat Company is usually there with their bright yellow taxis. You can't miss it!

4. Dumbarton Oaks Gardens

One of my favorite Gardens in the DC area besides the US Botanical Garden, you'll find this sweet spot tucked away within Georgetown. Honestly, you probably wouldn't notice it even exists because it's not on M Street where all the action happens. But, that's also what makes it such a gem. The Gardens began as a country house owned by Mildred & Robert Woods Bliss which later became this landscape sanctuary that we love to visit. You can honestly spend hours here just admiring the different aspects of the garden alone. You can also visit the museum feature a lovely collection of artwork and historic pieces.

5. Have a Picnic at Book Hill Park

Though small, this beautiful hidden cove is a popular location for college students and the general public to stop by and admire the beautiful architecture in Georgetown. It's a nice scenic scape from the buildings for when you want to retreat back into nature a little bit.

6. Stroll down C&O Canal

As bright and fun as Georgetown is, there's also a lot of history to it. This canal that stretches almost 185 miles through DC and into Cumberland, MD is such a sight to see. As you make your way from the lovely bakeries on Grace Street & Thomas Jefferson, you can grab a yummy pastry while you take a serene stroll down this beautiful block. Rumor has it that there is a new boat tour that will be offered in the canal providing educational tours for schools and tourists. Even without the tour, I'd recommend checking out this lovely canal!

Shopping:

1. H&M

Whenever I go to a big city, I always try to find their H&M because they usually have more selections to choose from. This Georgetown location is great! If you are looking for a real Georgetown experience, you must check out some of their shops.

2. Francesca's

This is one of my absolute favorite shops! And even better to have it in one of my favorite parts of DC! This online boutique is now soaring parts of the US and they're always so much fun to visit.

3. Anthropologie

Do I really need to explain this one? We all love a good Anthropologie find. This store in Georgetown is great because it has two levels. You'll be sure to find some cute items. Especially if you're like me and head straight to the clearance section.

4. Ching Ching Cha Tea Shop

As a teas lover, I always love finding shops that sell the best. You can find some great tea not only to drink on site, but also to take home with you. The selections are endless and they

5. James Allen

This store may not interest everyone, but I definitely love it. Especially since there are only a two store throughout the US. Besides, NY, DC is the only other location where you can actually go into the store. If you're browsing around and want to take a peak at some rings or other jewelry in person, then you can snag an opportunity while you're in Georgetown.

All in All,

I hope you found these suggestions to be helpful. I know personally, I always love looking at other people's thoughts on how I can use my time the best when visiting a new area. And even if you're a DC local, you can still benefit from suggestions of new spots you can visit within the city. DC is small but also big at the same time. There's so much you can do! And the best part is that everything is so close to each other. I hope the next time you're in Georgetown, you have the chance to check out at least one of these recommendations!
